Adventures in Cheese Making – Walk this Whey

I’ve had homemade cheeses before and loved how they tasted, but I never got around to making cheese myself. So one day recently, I mustered up the courage and began the process of learning how to make a simple cheese.

Making cheese is a lot simpler than one might think – at least when it comes to making a simple cheese. You can make it just by heating milk and adding vinegar, which is fairly similar to the way I improvise on a recipe requiring buttermilk. When I make imitation buttermilk, all I do is add lemon to the milk until it curdles, the only difference is that when it comes to making cheese, you harvest the curdled part. The solid substance is called the curd, the leftover liquid is called whey – the same curds and whey Miss Muffet enjoyed.

This seemed a little too easy and this type of cheese is fairly soft, with an almost cottage cheese-like consistency. I researched a little further to find a way to make a firmer cheese?

The answer came… Rennet! Rennet is traditionally made from the stomach of a calf, it is salted after the beast is slaughtered. You can buy rennet easily through various cheese-making supply websites. I was too impatient to wait to get the real stuff, but I found out that there were other forms of rennet that would give the same results. After looking for what seemed like an eternity, I found a recipe for vegetarian rennet. I took about a pound of nettle leaves, a couple of ounces of hops, and some yarrow flowers, put then in a pot and covered it with just enough water to immerse the plants. I brought it to a simmer and then let it sit for a while to steep. I then drained it and added about a cup of salt.

Another thing that helps in cheese-making is conditioning the milk. Through my research I found that I had to add live cultures… but where to get them? The answer ended up being rather simple, buttermilk and yogurt. In the same pot as the milk, I poured a half-gallon of milk, one quart of buttermilk, and a whole container of yogurt. I put in half a pint of heavy cream for good measure. I let this sit for a good two hours and guess what? It began to curdle. I wanted thicker curds though, so I poured a half-cup of my homemade rennet in and the curds got thicker in just a matter of minutes. To promote the growth of the bacteria in the yogurt, I let it sit a while, warming it slightly over the stove, careful to not even bring it to a simmer.

I could now see the curds and the whey. The whey was a pale yellowish hue and the curds looked a little bit like scrambled egg whites. I then lined a colander with cheesecloth and proceeded to filter the curds from the whey. I put the curds into a bowl and added salt to further help the removal of excess liquid. Next, I returned it to the colander lined with a fresh layer of cheesecloth. I was anxious to taste it, and wow, it actually tasted like cheese!

The next step is optional – putting your cheese in a mold and pressing it. To make my press, I rummaged around the kitchen to see what I could use. I took an old plastic sherbet container and put a bunch of holes in it. I then placed my cheese curd filled cheesecloth inside and placed it in a large bowl and but a plate on top of my curds. Now the problem was having enough weight to press it. I placed two big cans of tomatoes on top and, voilà, it worked. After pressing it, I put the cheese into the refrigerator and let it set. It tasted a lot like cheddar.

Next time I try to make cheese, I probably use this same recipe but will try to improve upon it. When I master this one, then I think I’ll feel a little more like trying a different style of cheese. Happy cheese making!

Two Types of Electronic Air Pump – High Pressure-Low Volume and Low Pressure-High Volume

Have your tires gone out of shape? Save those sweats and do not let your day get the best of you. Let this article give you a break from literally pumping yourself out by using an air pump in inflating some things by sparing your extra time of reading this. Nowadays, electric air pump is highly suggested for people who waste their breath, time and effort for those manual air pump. Now you can just sit back and relax yourself from those tiring things. Just a piece of advice, electric air pump is now capable of avoiding those unnecessary things. But of course, there are still matters such as “complementary things”. Like for example, peanut butter and bread, which is just a simple analogy that things really do need to avoid mismatching. By using electric pump, there is also a consideration about it, and thus, this thing would follow.

Because it is electric, it does not mean it is compatible for every inflatable. There are tow type of pump, the high volume/low pressure and the low volume/high pressure pump. Like in a bicycle, the volume it encompasses is small, it goes with low volume. However, bicycle tires require high pressure (up to 100 pounds of pressure), so make sure to use the appropriate pump for it because if you would not match the concept of complementing air pump to inflatable, it will not serve its own purpose.

Take for example, in inflating a boat, it takes about 35-40 pounds of pressure, but the volume is greater than that of tire of the bicycle. Inflating the boat manually requires a great deal of effort to reach the required pressure due to increasing volume. You may have a choice on whatever preference of pump you may use like using either manual bicycle tire pump or car tire pump to inflate an inflatable boat will take a long time since you are only getting low volume and the chance of over pressuring the product and you are producing high pressure. In other sense, if you are going to use gasoline station to pump air, which produces high pressure, to inflate a marine inflatable product, it will go quickly even with the proportion of lower volume, which in chance that the marine inflatable could over inflate and explode.

The point here is simple. You must not interchange both high volume/low pressure to a low volume/high pressure or the opposite way either, as this may cause eventual over inflation of the product. More or less, this concept is important in using your air pump, which is why electronic air pump is suitable for many inflatable, because it has greater option of specific use. However, you still must be particular to the pump you are using with inflatable.

Yandere Simulator – A Stealth Video Game For The PC

Yandere Simulator is a free video game for PC users. It is a stealth type video game where the players play as a high school girl named Ayano Aishi. She is in love with her senior, senpai and wants to attain his attention by any means possible. It is quite a unique game with an addictive gameplay and good graphics. However, it is still in development stage and until it gets completed, it’s going to be a bit buggy.

The concept

Yandere Simulator is based on a typical Japanese high school theme. Ayano Aishi has a huge crush on her senpai and wants his love. However, she’s a bit reluctant to talk to him directly. And, to make things more difficult, it seems like her senpai is quite popular as other girls in the school are also trying to get close to him. Ayano has to eliminate her competition, and she can use all possible means to do so. Even blackmailing and killing other girls is allowed. However, she has to do these missions quietly, when no one is looking at her. Thus, comes the stealth element.

What’s in it for the players

Because of its high school drama element, the game is quite popular among the teenagers. However, that doesn’t stop some grown-up video gamers from playing the game. The gameplay is good despite the fact that the game is quite full of bugs. Control options are great, and the missions are challenging. To progress in the game players have to tasks that are quite immoral in the real world. However, it is this element that makes the game unique and addictive. Players have to complete the tasks without leaving any traces. Otherwise, Ayano will get caught and the game ends.

The game is quite detailed and relates quite much to the real world. For example, there is a social element in the game and that we live in a large group, we don’t want to get caught for the wrongdoings, etc.

The game is not complete

Again, Yandere Simulator is still in development stage and what available is the beta version. The developer of the game has made the beta version available on the internet for download and installation without spending any penny. Simply visit the official website to download the game. The download file is actually the game launcher using which you can also update the game. The game developer usually makes the update available after two weeks.

Since the game is still at testing phase, players experience quite many bugs, errors. In some cases, the game launcher doesn’t work and sometimes the game crashes. Also, you will never win the game because it is not complete yet.

PHCS Health Insurance Quotes, Plans, and Company Review

When looking for health insurance it is very important to keep in mind that there are many companies out there that will try offering you the best prices for your needs. However, not all of them are known all around the United States and not all of them offer you the same benefits. One of the many companies offering coverage in the continental United States is Private Health Care Systems best known as PHCS. They are the primary national PPO network and care management product of the company MultiPlan.

Before talking about PHSC it’s important to know a little bit more about the parent company. MultiPlan was founded in 1970 and is the oldest and largest of independent, network-based cost management solutions. They have more than half a million health care providers that service an estimated 40 million consumers. To top it all of the estimated millions of consumers have about 70 million claims that are processed through MultiPlan’s networks each year. How about that for a health insurance option?

On the other hand Private Health Care Systems (Owned by MultiPlan as said before) has the largest proprietary preferred provider (PPO) organization in all the United States. With about 450,000 members attending one of the 4,000 facilities PHCS members have access to a variety of providers around the United States. They are also the first and only propriety network to earn five endorsements due to quality from two nationally recognized quality assurance organizations, URAC and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

PHCS’ job is to contact their providers in order for them to allow their network member to visit them at lower costs. The network also has something referred to as a “High network retention rate” which means that once a customer selects a Primary Care Physician (PCP) that doctor will remain available all through their health plan. Most of the people that are members of this great network include large employers such as companies and enterprises, commercial insurance carriers, regional managed cared organizations and third party administrators. The PHCS network offers the following to its members:

National Access with Excellent Cost Savings: No matter where the members are, they offer a variety of services from coast to coast. You can contact them at (866) 750-7427 to see how much they can save you in health care costs.

PHCS Healthy Directions: Eliminates the need of having an HMO, PPO or POS because it pays full charges for services when a member travels or goes to school outside the coverage area. As a member you will be able to have freedom in order for you to choose a provider from within the national network, to lower your out of pocket costs for members with providers in the PHCS Network, and to call a toll free number in your I.D. card for provider information.

Quality: PHCS didn’t just link a variety of little networks and pierce them together, instead they created a national network that allows them to credential and re-credential their providers to maintain good quality healthcare.

Private Health Care Systems is a care management company as well as network based insurance. PHCS is the second largest independent care management company functioning in the United States today. Their care management specialists review any patients’ cases to make certain that patients receive the best treatment available as well as giving them freedom to from a variety of options that nest suit their unique utilization review needs. You are able to employ this care management system in the area of your business where it will make the biggest impact. PHCS Core Plan includes the following utilization management products, however, is important to keep in mind that you can add some supplemental products that will be discussed below in addition to the Core Value ones.

Core Value Plan:

1. Concurrent Review

2. Certification

3. Discharge Planning

History of Guinness World Records

One of the most popular books that come out every year is the Guinness book of records. This is now more commonly known as the Guinness world records. This popular book chronicles things such as the best and worst or the longest and shortest or many other recordable facts from throughout the world.

This book is accredited to the Irish twins Ross and Norris McWhirter who actually published the first Guinness book of records in Britain as far back as 1955. What a lot of people do not actually realize though is that the book is commissioned by a famous brewery in Ireland namely the Guinness brewery.

Guinness came up with the idea of making the book in order to further promote their product and bring more revenue into their company. The book initially was just a way of letting people know the answers too many of the bar bets that were being run at the time.

It is rumored that the original idea came in 1951 when a certain Sir Hugh Beaver, who was at the time a managing director of the Guinness Empire was participating in a shooting party. He somehow got into an exchange of words with another person about Europe’s fastest bird. They argued about whether it was the Koshin Golden Plover or the Grouse.

Whilst he was trying to find the answer from his reference books in his Castlebridge House library, he suddenly realized that the books were a little vague with the answer.

Then a thought struck his mind that perhaps a book like this could in fact be quite interesting. This was the start of the Guinness book of records.

This annual book has sold millions of copies since it was first published in 1955. Funnily enough it now holds a record itself as the most popular and best selling of all the copyrighted serial books in the world.

One unenviable record that this book holds is that it is book most likely to be stolen from public libraries in the United States.

FAQS About Metal Roofs

Metals roofs are an excellent financial investment towards home improvement. If you are in the market for a new roof, you would not be making a mistake by considering a metal roofing system. But like all major investments, you likely have questions; questions that require an answer if you expect to make a decision.

If you are interested in learning more about metal roofs, contact a local and trusted roofing company and schedule an in-home assessment. They can provide all the information you need to make an informed decision about your home’s roof, as well as, customize their recommendations to the unique qualities of your existing property.

In the meantime, continue reading to review some frequently asked questions about metal roofs, and perhaps get some answers you are looking for right now.

Are They Long-Lasting?

Yes! With proper installation and routine maintenance, they can last between 20 and 50 years! That far exceeds the life expectation of asphalt shingles, which have a shelf life of 10 to 20 years. This means they can last two to three times longer than alternative roofing systems!

Are They Loud?

Many people worry that a metal roof will reverberate noise when it rains. But with proper installation and underlayment, it is virtually silent in these conditions. Metallic panels will not vibrate like a barn pole roof! Also, the attic space and ceiling below provide more space, which reduces sound transfer.

Are They Eco-Friendly?

Yes! Metal alloys can be recycled and reused over and over again. Once a metal roof is ready for replacement, all materials can be reprocessed into something new. They are safe, sustainable, and recyclable for up to 100 years!

Are They More Expensive?

Initially, the cost is a significant upfront investment. However, the long-term benefits you receive far outweigh the initial cost of purchase and installation, making it well worth it overtime. Often times, they also come with excellent warranties, and you will not need to replace it for the rest of your life! Be sure to ask your contractor about warranty information and details.

Will They Attract Lightning?

This is another common question, and a good one for that matter. It is a myth that metal roofs attract lightning. In fact, it makes you safer in a lightning storm, hypothetically. That is because it would help disperse the energy safely throughout the structure of your home. Metal rooftops are also noncombustible and nonflammable. Again, they will not attract lightning, whatsoever.

Dragon Age Origins – An RPG Without the Average "Grind"

If you consider yourself a “gamer,” in any fashion of the word, and unless you have been living under a rock for the past year, you have heard all the buzz about Dragon Age: Origins. This recent release by Bioware is a multi-faceted, free-will RPG (Role Playing Game) that fulfills much of what keeps us coming back for more, without any of the typical throw-your-monitor-off-the-roof “grinding.”

What is “grinding,” you ask? Any RPG fan of the past thirty years (perhaps before that, even) will know this term all too well. In most RPG’s, building up your character involves honing and developing skills, and advancing to higher “levels.” Leveling is handled differently in each game, but nearly always follows the law of diminishing returns. Each subsequent level takes more work and more time to achieve than the previous.

Because of this frustrating, albeit necessary feature, at some point in the game, most RPG’s are reduced to the tedious and boring act of “Go to *area X,* fight and kill *creature Y* for two hours, level up” and repeat. This is the act known as “grinding.” Repeatedly doing the same act over and over again to achieve some goal, no matter how frivolous.

Many analysts feel that grinding is one thing that turns players away from new RPG’s, speculating that they realize the potential task before them and are unwilling to commit the time necessary to succeed. This is why one major strength of Dragon Age: Origins, and possibly one of its most attractive features, is the entire removal of grinding.

Not only did the developers remove the need for grinding by “scaling” experience earned across all battles, but they completely removed any possibility of it. A   unique  feature of Dragon Age: Origins is that there are a finite number of possible enemies to fight, and therefore a finite amount of total experience the player can receive. Not only does this remove the boring, time-consuming task of grinding for higher levels, but it also ensures that all players will eventually be able to complete the game.

I suspect that the removal of grinding from Dragon Age: Origins is something that will become much more common in RPG’s of the future. Developers will see the benefits of attracting players that are not necessarily willing to commit literally hundreds of hours to a game, while still providing enough content and replay value to keep the old fans amused.
